Defend’s senior market campaigner Maya Rommwatt guest starred on the Green Living Gurus’ podcast titled Green Living With Tee. The Green Living Gurus are a collection of women whose mission is to share tools and information on how to decrease exposure to toxic chemicals and help people live healthy lifestyles.
Maya joined Therese “Tee” Forton-Barnes as she unpacked our recently released report titled Hidden Hazards: The Chemical Footprint of a Plastic Bottle. Maya highlighted the negative impacts that plastic bottles have on our health, the environment, and communities of color who are subjected to cancer-causing toxic emissions during the PET production process.
“We found that PET production in the US is the number one manufacturing process for emitting ethylene oxide into the air. The making of PET [plastic] bottles is the biggest emitter. We know that in all of these communities where the emissions are happening, in what we call ‘fenceline communities’, the impacts are disproportionate. They’re often black and brown communities and low-income communities.”
Defend Our Health continues to emphasize the safer alternatives that are present, as well as holding companies accountable for using these alternatives.
