Let’s get toxic products off store shelves

Products on store shelves should be safe.

In our home state of Maine, we worked with the Maine Legislature and passed a law to eliminate toxic PFAS from products we use every day. We’re the first state in the nation to get this done! (LD 1503)

We’ve recently developed a new web-based resource that identifies suppliers of preferred food contact materials across the supply chain from farm to fork. Brand owners like Chipotle, Whole Foods Market, Keurig Dr Pepper and Brew Dr Kombucha have led the pack in switching to safer alternatives and now we want to provide guidance for other food and beverage companies to do the same.

Currently, we’re advocating for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to add toxic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) to be added to the list of chemicals of concern that manufacturers must disclose in children’s products.

The U.S. government currently allows over 40,000 chemicals in consumer products, and the vast majority have never been tested for safety.

A race to the top

We also work nationally and in collaboration with the Mind the Store campaign, of which we are a founding member, to organize consumers and engage retailers in a race to the top to enact safer chemical policies and get dangerous chemicals off store shelves.
