Which food service gloves contain toxic phthalates?

Dining out is linked to higher exposure to toxic phthalates, and one possible source of phthalates in restaurant food are the disposable plastic gloves used to prepare and serve a meal. We wondered: Which gloves contain toxic phthalates that can migrate into your meal?

We sampled and tested over 120 plastic food service gloves from top distributors and popular restaurant chains in the U.S. in order to answer that question.

Top fast food restaurants, including Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Burger King, are using some gloves that contain toxic phthalates to handle and serve food.

Our Findings

We discovered that top fast food restaurants, including Wendy’s, McDonald’s, and Burger King, are using some PVC gloves that contain phthalates to handle and serve food. And we discovered that the only way to keep harmful phthalates from contaminating a restaurant meal from foodservice gloves is to stop using PVC or vinyl gloves altogether.
