Food shouldn’t come wrapped in harmful chemicals.

Families deserve food that isn’t coated with toxic chemicals. The fact is, toxic chemicals are entering our food supply through processing and packaging. And they pose significant health risks, particularly to pregnant women and children.

Many fast food wrappers and take-out containers are coated with toxic ‘forever chemicals’ known as PFAS—per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

PFAS is found in packaging such as bakery bags, microwave popcorn bags, and fast food wrappers. PFAS have been linked to interfering with normal brain development in children, as well as to certain cancers.

Exposure to some PFAS increases infectious disease risk, causes thyroid disease, and is linked to kidney and testicular cancer.

Most comprehensive law in the nation

In our home state of Maine, Defend Our Health played a critical role in advocating for passage of the nation’s most comprehensive law banning toxic PFAS and phthalates in food packaging. The Safe Food Packaging Act was passed unanimously by the Maine Legislature in 2019. Read all about it here.
