No more toxic sludge.

Toxic chemicals including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) often end up in our food and water after toxic sludge is spread on farm fields as a fertilizer. (Sludge is the leftovers from wastewater treatment; some PFAS used in products by consumers and business are washed down the drain and end up creating toxic sludge.)

It’s time for states and municipalities to stop the use of toxic ‘biosolids’ or sewage sludge as fertilizer on farm fields, where it contaminates food and feed crops with PFAS and other toxic chemicals.

“When will this nightmare end?”

WATCH: A Farmer’s Livelihood Ruined by Toxic Sludge

We’ve been working with Fred Stone since 2019 to advocate for policies to protect farms and farm food from toxic sludge contamination, in our home state of Maine and across the nation.

In 2019, we awarded Fred our Grassroots Leadership Award in recognition of his speaking out, at great personal cost, to raise awareness and advocate for change to protect his fellow farmers.
